Sozopol is the most ancient town on Bulgaria’s coast with its history going as far as 2600 years back.
The town was first established as a Hellenistic colony named Apolonia Pontica and in time became a lively commercial, spiritual, and cultural center in Antiquity due to which it received the status of a city-state. The town’s long history, spanning more than two millennia, is interwoven with every society, empire, and country that has had dominion over the Balkan Peninsula: Thracians, Hellenes, Romans, Byzantines, Bulgarians, Ottomans, etc. ;
History and archeology lovers can visit: :the Archeological and Ethnographic museums; the archeological excavations of early Christian temples and the preserved and partially reconstructed parts of the ancient city walls and towers, as well as the Church of the Holy Virgin which dates back to the 15th century and was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites; the still functioning churches St. Georgi (from the 19th century) and St. Zossim, built in 1857, as well as the church St. St. Cyril and Methodius, where the holy remains of St. john the Baptist, found on the island named after him (St. Ivan island, located in close proximity to Sozopol), are housed. Many of the buildings and the medieval churches in the town were destroyed by the Ottomans and as a result many small chapels were built in their place – about 20 or so.
Sozopol also has excellent conditions for the practice of different kinds of water sports and the opportunity to take a trip on a boat, or a small ship, either to the nearby island of St. Ivan or around the bay. And for those of you who would like to enjoy a night on the town- in Sozopol you will find a large variety of cafés, restaurants, bars, and night clubs.
Sozopol’s Old Town was declared an archeological and architectural museum-reserve. There are about 180 buildings from the 18th and early 19th centuries, which complete the town’s unique look.
Sozopol is famous for being a magnet for painters, authors, and artistsof any kind. Every year the art festival Apolonia is held in the town along with many other dance and song festivals. The town’s art gallery is one of the most visited sights by the tourists.
Romantics can fully experience the Old Town’s wonderful and unique atmosphere by taking long walks along its cobblestone streets or simply finding a peaceful place to rest for a bit and enjoy the aroma of the sea and the fig trees. When you are in the Old Town, the charm of its architecture and all around look and the possibility of a breathtaking sea vista are always just around the corner.
